Gems of the Finnish Puppet Theatre for Children and Adults

03.09.2024

MUKAMAS 2024 festival week is approaching! Next week, we will have wonderful performances from four countries in Tampere, but we also want to highlight extremely talented national puppeteers. Finnish visitors arrive from Espoo, Helsinki, Pori, Turku and the festival’s hometown Tampere.

Tehdas Teatteri’s glowingly entertaining puppet romance for adults

Tehdas Teatteri’s adult show Angelika ja kuumat paikat dusts the cherry on the cake and the most incredible adventures from the caches of DVD boxes. In the journey of Angelika, known from entertainment novels, we throw ourselves from one man, one problem, and one love to another. In the haze of historic France, the sultan’s harem and the slave market, we also encounter pressing questions about the light in which the female figure can be seen in this era.

Tehdas Teatteri brings the work of award-winning puppeteers from Turku to Tampere for the first time. The heartwarming puppet romance is presented on the Hällä stage.

KO-KOO-MO’s multi-sensory Palikkateatteria (Block Theatre)

KO-KOO-MO from Kemiönsaari visits Teatteri Mukamas with their adult performance Palikkateatteria (Block Theatre). The main part of the show are wooden blocks, a human-shaped reconstruction series designed by visual artist Kai Ruohonen. In a wordless performance, the blocks come to life with the help of a puppeteer, music and sound world and lead the viewer to different worlds with the power of imagination. After the performances, spectators participate in a block workshop.

Teatteri Hevosenkenkä’s and Puppet Theater Sampo’s charming children’s shows

Teatteri Hevosenkenkä from Espoo amuses families on the Hällä stage with show Konna ja Konstaapeli Kerttu. Many funny characters frolic in the fast-paced bandit chase: the sympathetic dog Puppe, the cunning lollipop thief Toukkanen, the neighbor’s cheeky aunt Tyyne Puputti and the police duo Jantunen and Juntunen.

Puppet theater Sampo, operating in Helsinki, is coming to Tampere for our pleasure with its musical play The Bunny and a Miraculous Cloud. Based on the book The Bunny and the Egg by Margaret Wise Brown, the dramatized play features cute little animal puppets, rhymes, songs and live music. The warm-hearted performance is suitable for all ages.

Puppeteers from Tampere perform

Anne Välinoro’s Kotileikki monologue, aimed at adults, tells about the different homes in life and the memories they leave behind in the lives of two ninety-something women. The performance, which is presented in Teatteri Mukamas, is accompanied by Joonatan Huuk’s sound world and puppets designed by Erja Mikkola.

Teatteri Mukamas, which has organized the festival for 25 years, also offers a taste of its own repertoire. On the eve of the festival, Tuesday 10.9. let’s tune in to the festive atmosphere when Juhlapäivä is performed on Pispala’s home stage. Mukamas’ 45th anniversary play is a funny combination of puppet show, music and dance. The Children’s Saturday yard event will feature two free performances of the popular Hiirulainen ja Suuri Seikkailu – Kesä show. Even the smallest in the family can enjoy the magic of puppet theater in Finlayson’s Media 54 space in the Satuvarjon Alla: Pikku-Siili baby theatre performances.
